The disagreement between the governor and five key decision-makers in Oyo town has escalated over the selection process for the new Alaafin of Oyo. The kingmakers, led by their legal representative Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), have criticized Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to start a fresh selection process, arguing that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin has already been chosen as the Alaafin-elect.
In a letter addressed to the governor, the kingmakers expressed their disapproval of the appointment of new warrant kingmakers by the Oyo State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, stating that it disregards a pending court case related to the selection process. Sobaloju emphasized the illegality of proceeding with a new selection process while the court case is ongoing, cautioning against undermining the judiciary and violating the constitution.
The conflict stems from conflicting views on the rightful successor to the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away in April 2022 after a long reign. The kingmakers are adamant about their choice of Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as the next Alaafin of Oyo and are urging the governor to respect the legal process and suspend any plans for a fresh selection until the court matter is resolved.
