There are indications that the disciplinary committee set up by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not take action against erring members before the next party convention. The PDP Governors’ Forum has given a deadline of February 2025 for the party to convene the National Executive Council meeting.
The disciplinary committee, advised by some PDP leaders, has decided to focus on reconciliation and potentially allow the next convention to deal with members who have violated party rules. The party is gearing up for its convention to elect new leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While some party leaders affirm that both the reconciliation and disciplinary committees are collaborating to avoid further division within the party, a senior PDP member expressed concerns that the committee, led by Tom Ikimi, may have been set up to fail by certain members of the National Working Committee.
The source revealed that the formation of the committee may contradict the PDP constitution, as it includes 26 members instead of the stipulated seven. This discrepancy raises questions about the validity of any sanctions proposed by the committee.
Despite internal strife within the party following the 2023 presidential election, with calls for the suspension of various members, the disciplinary committee has been relatively silent on its activities. Concerns have been raised about the committee’s transparency and adherence to party rules.
The PDP NEC member emphasized the need for patience and trust in the committee’s process, highlighting the caliber of individuals involved. The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP reiterated the party’s focus on reconciliation over discipline, emphasizing the importance of unity within the party.
In a separate development, the PDP Governors’ Forum has urged the NWC to convene a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee by February 2025 to address critical challenges facing the party. The forum emphasized the importance of unity and cohesion within the party.
In conclusion, efforts are being made to stabilize the party and restore its reputation as a leading choice for Nigerians. Party leaders are strategizing to ensure the party’s stability and its ability to provide hope to the citizens.
