PDP govs drag Tinubu, N’Assembly before Supreme Court over Fubara’s suspension

A group of governors from states governed by the Peoples Democratic Party have taken legal action before the Supreme Court to challenge the six-month suspensions of the Rivers State Governor and his deputy, along with members of the Rivers House of Assembly. The suspensions were imposed by the President due to a state of emergency declared in the state. The state legislatures supported the President’s decision, but the governors from other states questioned the President’s authority to carry out such suspensions.

The governors argued that the President overstepped his powers by suspending elected officials and appointing a sole administrator. They sought the Supreme Court’s declaration that the suspensions were unconstitutional and unlawful, citing violations of the constitution. Additionally, they challenged the appointment of the sole administrator and the National Assembly’s approval process, claiming it did not meet constitutional requirements.

The governors requested the Supreme Court to nullify the state of emergency proclamation, prevent the President from implementing the suspensions, and stop any interference with the affected officials’ duties. They also sought to prevent any future suspensions of governors by the President.
