The Port Harcourt refinery in Rivers State, operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, has faced multiple delays in commencing fuel production despite promises made by government officials. The refinery, which was expected to start operations in September 2024, has yet to provide an update on its progress. The contractor responsible for the refinery’s rehabilitation stated that details on the project’s completion would be shared by early October.
The NNPC has repeatedly assured Nigerians of the refinery’s imminent operation, with various deadlines passing without fulfillment. The country’s reliance on imported fuel due to insufficient refining capacity has led to significant expenditures. Efforts to revive the nation’s refineries have been ongoing, including a recent loan for the refurbishment of the Port Harcourt refinery. There is optimism among Nigerians that once operational, the refinery will reduce fuel imports and lower petrol prices.
