Plateau planning to start manufacturing drugs – Commissioner

In an interview with the Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Shurkuk Bako, insights were shared on the efforts to improve the health sector under the leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang in the North Central state.

Assessing the current health situation in Plateau State:

The health sector in Plateau State has seen significant improvements since Governor Mutfwang took office. The initial challenges of strikes and locked healthcare facilities were swiftly addressed, leading to enhanced service delivery and industrial harmony in the state.

Areas of significant changes in the health sector:

Improvements have been made in human resources with the employment of specialists, renovation of healthcare facilities, and the initiation of residency training programs. Efforts have also been geared towards ensuring the availability of quality healthcare services and drugs for the people of Plateau.

Efforts towards pharmaceutical manufacturing and health agenda:

Plans for future involvement in drug manufacturing aim to ensure direct sourcing from manufacturers, quality control, and affordable pricing for patients, aligning with the broader health agenda of the state.

Update on the cholera outbreak:

Immediate response was provided to a cholera outbreak in Kanya community, with medical supplies mobilized to treat affected individuals. Awareness campaigns and surveillance efforts have been intensified to prevent further spread of the disease.

Addressing the acute personnel shortage in PHCs:

Measures such as engaging retired health personnel, initiating community nursing programs, and addressing workforce gaps are being undertaken to tackle the shortage of healthcare workers in primary healthcare facilities.

Major challenges facing the health sector in Plateau:

Inadequate funding and workforce shortages pose significant challenges to the health sector in Plateau State. Efforts are being made to address these challenges through strategic planning and resource allocation.

Top priority as Plateau’s Commissioner for Health:

The primary focus is on improving the quality of healthcare in Plateau State through deploying skilled professionals, upgrading facilities, and fostering collaborations. The goal is to position Plateau as a hub for medical tourism and enhance healthcare services for the people.
