Plateau recorded 581 HIV deaths, 2,270 new infections in 2023—Official

Plateau State has reported 2,260 new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infections and 581 related deaths in 2023, as revealed by the state Commissioner for Health. The disclosure was made during an event in Jos to mark the 2024 World AIDS Day, which is observed globally on December 1. This year’s theme, “Take the Right Path,” underscores the significance of making informed choices in the battle against HIV/AIDS.

The commissioner stated that there are currently 45,835 individuals living with HIV and receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in Plateau. Efforts have been made to expand HIV testing services to over 900 healthcare facilities and to raise awareness about prevention and treatment. Progress has been noted in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, with a significant number of pregnant women being tested in the first half of 2024.

Plateau State has met the 88-98-95 target and is striving towards achieving the UNAIDS global goal of 99-95-95 by 2030 to control the HIV epidemic. To steer towards the right direction, comprehensive sex education and awareness, especially among young people, are crucial. The commissioner stressed the importance of community engagement, improved healthcare access, and increased investment in research and innovation to combat the disease.

Acknowledgment was given to development partners for their collaboration in providing quality healthcare services in the state. The 2024 World AIDS Day, themed “Take the Right Path,” stresses the need for informed decisions, heightened awareness, and community-driven efforts in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. It urges individuals, governments, and organizations to prioritize prevention, treatment access, and support for those affected by the disease.
