Police arrest over 2,000 suspects in nationwide crackdown

The Nigeria Police has disclosed that more than 2,300 arrests have been made in various operations carried out nationwide from February 2025 to the present time.

A breakdown of the arrests revealed that there were 602 individuals apprehended for armed robbery, 385 for kidnapping, 557 for murder/homicide, 215 for unlawful possession of firearms, 286 for rape, and 276 for suspected cult activities.

During a briefing in Abuja, the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, informed the press that 333 firearms, 6,422 rounds of ammunition of different calibers, and 200 stolen vehicles were recovered by operatives. Additionally, a total of 324 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued.

Adejobi stated, “Focusing on operations conducted from February 2025 to date, the Nigeria Police Force has made significant strides in combating crime nationwide. Numerous arrests have been made in connection with various serious offenses.

“The arrests include 602 armed robbery suspects, 385 kidnapping suspects, 557 murder/homicide suspects, 215 suspects involved in unauthorized possession of firearms, 286 rape suspects, 276 suspected cultists, and the recovery of 333 firearms, 6,422 ammunition of different calibers, as well as the recovery of 200 stolen vehicles and the rescue of 324 kidnapping victims.”

Highlighting a notable case, Adejobi mentioned the apprehension of eight kidnappers at the Kogi-Edo border.

The suspects were identified as Tukur Salisu, Sani Abubakar, Mamud Sani, Umar Abdullahi, Salisu Mohammed, Salisu Usman, Bashir Audu, and Jibril Haruna.

He explained, “On 11/3/2025 around 1830hrs, operatives of IRT en route to Edo state on a special assignment at Oshara Ganden, a border between Kogi and Edo states, encountered an ambush by kidnappers.

“The operatives acted swiftly, subdued the heavily armed kidnappers, arrested eight of them, and seized 1 AK-47 rifle with 29 rounds of ammunition, 1 new Israeli pump action rifle with four cartridges, two pump-action rifles with seven cartridges each, a single-barrel rifle with two cartridges, and two operational motorcycles.”
