Police officer kills teenage boy over fireworks in Delta

In Ozoro community, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, a tragic event unfolded when a 17-year-old boy named Emeka Odogwu was fatally shot by a police officer. The incident occurred on a Saturday night when the police discovered fireworks in the possession of the victim and attempted to arrest him. Reports indicate that the boy resisted arrest, leading to an altercation that resulted in the policeman firing his weapon, causing the boy’s death.

Following the incident, a human rights group known as Initiative For Social Rights Concerns And Advancement strongly criticized the actions of the officer involved and called for a thorough investigation by the Delta State Police Command. The group’s National Coordinator, Derrick Agberen, emphasized the importance of holding the responsible officer accountable for his actions.

Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, Agberen urged both Nigerians and community members to remain calm and civil, particularly when interacting with armed police personnel. The group condemned the officer’s behavior and called for justice to be served in the case.

In response to inquiries, the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and stated that the officer in question had been identified and detained. The State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has intervened in the matter and assured the family of the deceased that justice will be served.
