Policemen face trial over N1m extortion from corpers

The Lagos State Police Command has initiated the trial of four police officers who are accused of extorting N1 million from three National Youth Service Corps members in the Surulere area. It was reported that the corps members were stopped along the Surulere expressway where the officers surrounded their vehicle, leading to an altercation before the alleged extortion took place at the Area C Police Command station.

An individual shared the incident on social media, stating that the officers threatened the corps members with firearms, took them to the police station, and extorted money from them for not having a physical copy of a driver’s license. The victims claimed that one officer in plain clothes, believed to be their superior, was the one who collected the money.

A video recorded by one of the corps members captured the confrontation where police demanded to see a driver’s license. The situation escalated as the officers threatened and demanded money from the victims.

One of the corps members narrated that they were coerced into giving money, with one victim being forced to transfer Bitcoin worth $842. The Police Public Relations Officer mentioned that the accused officers were identified and undergoing questioning, with their trial already in progress.
