The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation has provided relief materials valued at N1bn to the Borno State Government to aid flood victims in 2024. The Dangote Group made this donation, comprising both food and non-food items, which were officially handed over in Maiduguri. The committee’s Secretary, Hajara Modu, reiterated their dedication to assisting communities affected by the disastrous floods, fulfilling a promise made during the crisis.
Maiduguri faced severe flooding in September, submerging a significant portion of the city and making Borno the most impacted state in Nigeria. Thousands of people were displaced, homes destroyed, and basic services disrupted. Dangote had previously pledged N2bn, with N1bn channeled through the committee for relief materials and another N1bn from the Aliko Dangote Foundation.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, represented by Deputy Umar Kadafur, expressed appreciation to the committee and Dangote for their continuous support. Zulum also announced the formation of a state committee to oversee the proper distribution of relief items to those in need.
The commitment of Alhaji Dangote to humanitarian causes has greatly aided in the recovery efforts in Borno, touching numerous lives and lessening the impact of disasters. The National Emergency Management Agency commended Dangote for his leadership in humanitarian endeavors, highlighting the donation as a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu.
Relief items distributed included food provisions like beans, seasonings, and sugar, as well as non-food essentials such as mosquito nets, mattresses, and sanitary pads. Borno’s Commissioner for Women and Social Development praised the intervention as significant. NEMA’s Northeast Zonal Coordinator assured that a transparent system is in place to ensure the fair distribution of these items.
