Primary healthcare can tackle 90% of diseases -UNICEF

The importance of Primary Health Care (PHC) as a fundamental aspect of the health sector was emphasized by the Chief of Health for UNICEF Nigeria during a media dialogue and field trip in Jigawa State. An MoU signed in 2022 aimed to enhance routine immunization and PHC systems to reduce mortality rates, especially among women and children.

UNICEF stressed that PHC plays a crucial role in disease treatment and prevention, with 90% of illnesses treatable at this level. The focus is not only on treating diseases but also on preventive services like vaccinations, which have saved millions of lives. Challenges such as a shortage of health workers, inadequate data, insufficient funding, and weak supply chains hinder PHC effectiveness in Nigeria.

Efforts are being made to strengthen PHC in areas that require support to ensure comprehensive healthcare delivery. In Jigawa State, resources from the Gavi MoU are being leveraged to revitalize PHCs and improve health outcomes. The state government is investing significantly in PHC revitalization, with 281 active apex PHCs receiving upgrades, including the provision of essential amenities for midwives.

The commitment to enhancing PHCs in Jigawa State to provide accessible health services to communities was reiterated by the Director of Primary Health Care. The state aims to transform the PHC landscape to positively impact the well-being of its residents.
