The UK prime minister is set to urge other leaders to join a coalition dedicated to safeguarding a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. He emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions show a lack of commitment to peace. The summit, attended by around 25 leaders, aims to secure concrete commitments amidst Putin considering a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the US.
The coalition, spearheaded by UK and France, seeks to provide security guarantees for Ukraine and deter Putin from violating any ceasefire. Discussions also involve technical aspects of implementing the ceasefire, with efforts to ensure peace is supported by strength.
Various countries have expressed willingness to contribute to peacekeeping efforts, while others have criticized Putin’s response to the ceasefire proposal. The focus remains on pressuring Russia economically to push for negotiations and supporting Ukraine in defending against Russian attacks.
Partners like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are involved in initial talks, along with NATO and EU representatives. The summit aims to coordinate contributions to the coalition of the willing and plan military support for Ukraine.
