Describe your job to a 5-year-old
Think of me like a magical gift giver, but instead of delivering presents from the North Pole, I help people send money to their loved ones who are far away every day.
What steps did you take to progress from a customer success intern to a director at an international company?
I became known for handling challenging tasks and delivering outstanding results. I embraced learning and implementing new ideas. Most importantly, I maintained resilience and focus on understanding the business operations and the contributions of each role towards the overarching goal.
How have your skills translated to your current role?
Every experience is valuable. From learning patience and empathy in previous roles to crisis management as a social media manager, community engagement as a content marketer, and understanding growth strategies—all have been beneficial. Every piece of knowledge gained has played a part.
What inspired your interest in remittances?
Personal connections sparked my interest. Building something to facilitate currency exchanges for my sister and friends who had moved away became a driving force.
What do you find most challenging in your role?
Ensuring overall satisfaction. From meeting customer needs with rates, services, and products, to adapting swiftly to new environments, tailoring strategies to local markets, and balancing the need for rapid growth while maintaining quality and customer happiness—it’s a complex balancing act. This demands a deep understanding of each market, effective collaboration with local teams, and the ability to make swift, informed decisions that drive growth without compromising on quality or customer experience.
What advice would you offer those looking to enter the fintech industry from a non-finance or engineering background?
Your foundation is crucial, so ensure it is strong. Utilize communities and networks—embrace networking and learning opportunities. Learning from individuals who have navigated similar challenges provides invaluable insights.
What projects are you currently involved in?
Leading growth initiatives in Africa for an international company is my current focus. We are expanding into new markets like East Africa and customizing services to meet the specific needs of these regions. In my role as a director, I have the opportunity to shape the overall strategy and explore building and leading local teams. It’s a dynamic position that allows me to significantly influence the company’s future in Africa.
What are your interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy engaging with communities through mentorship programs and speaking engagements. Connecting with people and sharing experiences is a passion of mine. I have collaborated with various groups and universities to exchange insights and knowledge.
