Red Cross seeks N2.5bn to tackle food insecurity

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has initiated an emergency appeal to aid the most vulnerable populations in Nigeria for the next eighteen months. The appeal aims to raise N2.5bn to enhance livelihoods, health, nutrition, and WASH services in severely affected areas.

The NRCS disclosed this information in a statement signed by the Coordinator of Communications and Advocacy, emphasizing the urgent need to address severe hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria. Reports suggest that without immediate intervention, over 31.5 million Nigerians could face food insecurity from January to October 2024 due to factors like conflict, inflation, and economic challenges.

Research indicates that staple food prices are projected to triple by October 2024, leading to a significant increase in cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition among children. The organization stresses the critical importance of increased support from partners, organizations, and individuals to address the escalating crisis.

To support these efforts, the NRCS plans to hold its inaugural Annual Fundraising Gala Night in Lagos with the theme “Keeping Humanity Alive” to raise funds for the hunger crisis appeal and WASH programs nationwide. The President of the NRCS expressed enthusiasm for uniting leaders and influencers across sectors to make a tangible impact on alleviating hunger and improving water and sanitation conditions for vulnerable communities.
