The House of Representatives recently acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for rectifying what they considered a significant historical oversight by awarding the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. This action came after the House highlighted the need for equal recognition between the Senate and the House of Representatives. In response, the President upgraded the Speaker’s award to GCON, restoring parity between the two chambers of the National Assembly.
Speaker Abbas expressed gratitude towards President Tinubu for upholding justice and fairness, noting the President’s commitment to democratic principles. The Speaker emphasized the importance of the House’s constitutional recognition and applauded the President for acknowledging and rectifying past discrepancies in national honors.
The House had previously passed a resolution urging the President to align the recognition of the Speaker with that of the Senate President and the Chief Justice of Nigeria to uphold the constitutional principle of equality between the legislative chambers. The resolution aimed to uphold institutional integrity and constitutional propriety, emphasizing the co-equal status of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in legislative authority.
