Reps propose legislative security directorate

The House of Representatives is preparing to discuss a bill that aims to create a legislative security directorate within the National Assembly. The bill, sponsored by a member representing a constituency in Ekiti State, outlines the qualifications and responsibilities of the security personnel, including the Sergeant-at-Arms.

If passed, the directorate will be responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals within the National Assembly complex, managing access to chambers, conducting security assessments, responding to emergencies, and collaborating with other security agencies.

The bill specifies the role and qualifications of the Sergeant-at-Arms, emphasizing the need for physical and mental fitness, educational background, service tenure, and a clean record. It also outlines the term limits and conditions for holding the position.

Furthermore, the bill prohibits unauthorized individuals from bringing firearms into the National Assembly precincts, except under specific circumstances. It authorizes the Head of the Sergeant-at-Arms and designated staff to carry firearms within the complex, with the President’s approval, for self-defense or to prevent serious crimes.

Additionally, the bill allows for the establishment of an armoury by the National Assembly, subject to presidential approval. These proposed measures aim to enhance security within the National Assembly and its precincts.
