There is a divergence of opinions among retired police officers regarding the potential extension of the tenure of the current Inspector-General of Police. The Inspector-General, who assumed office on June 19, 2023, is scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024. However, there are discussions about extending his tenure through an amendment to the Police Act that has been passed by the National Assembly but awaits the President’s signature.
In an interview, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police expressed opposition to the potential extension, emphasizing the importance of public input before such a decision is made. On the other hand, a retired Commissioner of Police supported the rumored extension, highlighting its benefits in allowing the Inspector-General to effectively execute his plans for the police force.
Another retired Assistant Inspector General of Police acknowledged that the final decision lies with the President, who has the authority to sign or reject the bill. Concerns were raised about the impact of the extension on the career progression of other officers, leaving the decision in the hands of the President.
