A human rights advocacy group has expressed strong opposition to the recent decision by the Nigerian Communications Commission to increase tariffs by 50% on calls, text messages, and data services. The group is urging the government to reverse this policy, warning of potential widespread protests if the decision is not revoked promptly.
The group emphasizes that the tariff hike will adversely affect Nigerians who are already struggling with rising living costs due to economic challenges. They argue that the increase in costs goes against efforts to make mobile services more affordable and accessible in the country.
Despite the NCC’s reasoning that the tariff hike is necessary to cover operational expenses and improve service delivery, many Nigerians have criticized the decision, especially considering the current economic hardships and inflation rates.
In response to the tariff hike, the Nigeria Labour Congress has encouraged citizens to prepare for a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services in protest. They denounce the increase as an unjust burden on people already facing financial difficulties.
The advocacy group warns that the tariff hike could widen the digital divide and worsen economic disparities in the country. They highlight the importance of affordable data and telecommunication services for Nigeria’s digital economy and mobile money sector, expressing concerns that higher costs could hinder their growth.
The group demands that the NCC reconsider its decision and explore alternative ways to support telecommunication companies without negatively impacting millions of Nigerians. They call on citizens to join them in opposing the planned tariff hike, describing it as unfair and disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary people.
