Members of the Ogoni community living abroad, organized as the Greater Ogonis in Diaspora Organisation, have strongly criticized the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his handling of the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State and have called for his immediate resignation.
The President of GODO, Chief Ambrose Kii, has even gone as far as to threaten taking the IG to the International Criminal Court if the police continue to show bias in the Rivers State crisis.
Chief Kii pointed out instances of alleged excessive force and violence against residents of Rivers State, as well as disrespect towards the state governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, whom he regards as the state’s chief security officer.
In a press release signed by Chief Kii on behalf of GODO, he expressed disappointment in the IG’s perceived inaction and partiality in resolving the crisis, which has led to loss of life, property destruction, and displacement of people over several months.
He stated, “The failure of the Inspector General of Police to uphold law and order in Rivers State, along with his perceived bias, has worsened the situation, and we demand his resignation.”
The actions of the IG have shaken the public’s trust in the security forces.
Furthermore, Chief Kii criticized the judiciary for issuing conflicting rulings, suggesting that they might be influenced by certain authorities in power.
He remarked, “The judiciary, once seen as the ultimate hope for justice, now appears compromised. Rather than ensuring fairness, they are making decisions that escalate the crisis without proper consideration. This erosion of trust is concerning.”
Kii also called out the Independent National Electoral Commission, accusing it of being swayed by political interests.
He remarked, “INEC is being used as a tool by self-serving politicians to manipulate elections. Their failure to resist external pressures undermines the democratic process. INEC must demonstrate independence and ensure transparent elections.”
Expressing disappointment in the President’s response to the crisis, Chief Kii urged him to act swiftly, stating, “As the leader of the nation, the President should work towards a lasting resolution to the crisis. Rather than condoning violence by his supporters, he should demand respect for the governor’s office. The President’s silence and inaction are prolonging the crisis.”
In light of these concerns, GODO is appealing to the international community for assistance in achieving a peaceful resolution to the crisis and urging civil society organizations to unite in advocating for justice and peace.
They are also urging conscientious Nigerians to stand against political violence and emphasizing the importance of impartiality and citizen protection by security agencies.
GODO stated, “We will not sit back while our state suffers from political unrest and violence. We demand transparency, justice, and peace. The people of Rivers State deserve better.”
