A recent attack in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, resulted in the loss of four lives according to city officials. The country’s foreign minister condemned the assault as a severe act carried out with ballistic missiles. Additionally, another strike in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia left 10 individuals wounded, as confirmed by the regional governor.
Kyiv is a frequent target for Russian drones and missiles, although casualties in the capital are uncommon due to robust air defense systems that provide better protection compared to other parts of the country. The head of Kyiv’s military administration reported the casualties in a central district of the city.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister expressed outrage on social media, stating that the attack is further evidence that Putin desires conflict over peace. The Ukrainian air force successfully intercepted two Iskander ballistic missiles and 24 Russian attack drones during the overnight assault.
The downed missiles caused damage to various structures in Kyiv, including an industrial building, a subway entrance, and residential buildings. The aftermath of the attack was visible on the streets, with flooding reported and a McDonald’s outlet left severely damaged.
Throughout the night, air defenses in Kyiv remained active, as confirmed by updates from the city’s mayor on social media. This attack coincides with Kyiv’s increased aerial strikes on Russian energy and military facilities in recent months.
In another instance, Zaporizhzhia was also targeted by Russian forces overnight, resulting in multiple injuries. The regional governor criticized the attack as a cynical move targeting the city center while residents were asleep.
