Serie A: Eight arrested as Udinese fans ambush Venezia supporters’ train

After a Serie A match on Saturday, a group of Udinese fans caused chaos by ambushing a train carrying Venezia supporters. The incident took place near Udine, where Udinese had won 3-2. Around 50 supporters covered their faces, lit flares, and blocked the tracks, forcing the Venezia supporter train to stop. This led to a violent clash involving fans from both sides, resulting in injuries and eight arrests, including individuals from Austria, Bosnia, and Albania.

Despite the swift police intervention, the brawl left several people injured, including two fans taken to the hospital and three police officers. The train also suffered damage from objects thrown during the altercation. Both clubs, Udinese and Venezia, condemned the violence and expressed concern for those hurt. They vowed to cooperate with authorities and stressed that such behavior does not represent true fans of the sport.

The match had been deemed high risk due to previous clashes between the two teams, particularly an incident in Venice at the end of October. Police had been on high alert, escorting Venezia fans to and from the stadium and stationed at Basiliano to prevent trouble from Udinese supporters. Reports suggest that Udinese hooligans had support from ultras linked to the Austrian club Salzburg.

The situation was swiftly contained, and the train resumed its journey a couple of hours after the disturbance began.
