A female soldier, Private Ruth Ogunleye, was discharged from the Nigerian Army after accusing a senior officer of sexual harassment. Ogunleye made the accusations on her social media page, alleging multiple instances of mistreatment. Following an investigation, it was determined that the accused officer did not commit the alleged offenses.
The Army spokesperson addressed the media, stating that Ogunleye had also been recommended for discharge on medical grounds due to concerns about her mental health. She underwent medical evaluation, which confirmed her vulnerability. Consequently, the Army decided not to pursue disciplinary action against her and discharged her from service.
Despite not qualifying for a pension, Ogunleye was granted a 50% monthly pension for life and received other benefits. The decision to discharge her was made in consideration of her well-being, and payments were processed accordingly.
