A man from Shanghai was reportedly scammed out of $28,000 in a fraudulent scheme involving a fictitious AI-generated girlfriend, as per Chinese state media reports. The scammers utilized advanced artificial intelligence technology to produce lifelike videos and images of a fictional character named “Ms. Jiao.” The victim, known as Mr. Liu, unknowingly transferred a significant sum of money to what he believed was his online romantic partner’s bank account. The scammers manipulated him by fabricating stories about financial needs for starting a business and covering medical expenses for a relative of his supposed “girlfriend.” To enhance the deceit, they even went as far as creating a counterfeit ID and medical records. Investigations revealed that a group of scammers orchestrated the elaborate ruse by utilizing AI-generated content and manipulated images. The victim never had a face-to-face encounter with the non-existent Ms. Jiao. CCTV footage exhibited a variety of AI-generated images depicting the fabricated woman in different settings, including one where she was seen holding a paint palette and another standing on a city street.
