The recent stampedes across the country have been described as a national tragedy by Vice President Kashim Shettima. He offered prayers for those who lost their lives in these unfortunate incidents. Shettima expressed his condolences to the families of the victims through a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Stanley Nkwocha.
These stampedes occurred as people rushed for food items provided by charitable organizations. In Okija, Anambra State, a Christmas palliative distribution turned tragic with 22 fatalities and multiple injuries. Similarly, in Abuja, ten individuals lost their lives during a Christmas food-sharing event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama. Another stampede happened at the Islamic High School in Ibadan, Oyo State, resulting in the loss of several children’s lives.
Vice President Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the losses and extended prayers and heartfelt condolences to the affected families. He emphasized the need for proper planning and organization to prevent such tragic incidents and assured that the federal government would offer necessary support to the affected families.
Shettima stated, “We are committed to providing assistance to the bereaved families during this challenging time and ensuring that those receiving medical treatment receive the care they need for a full recovery.”
