During the Christmas celebrations in Sokoto State, a Nigerian Air Force airstrike mistakenly hit two communities in Silame Local Government Area instead of the intended target of Lakurawa terrorists, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries to several residents. Eyewitnesses reported that at least 10 villagers were killed and many others were wounded in the accidental bombing. The affected communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, are close to the Surame forest, a known hideout for the Lakurawa sect and bandits.
In a separate incident, terrorists attacked a military base in Borno State using armed drones, injuring five troops. The insurgents targeted a Forward Operating Base in Wajiroko area of Damboa Local Government, resulting in injuries to soldiers and equipment damage.
Authorities have promised to investigate the incidents, with the Nigerian Air Force and Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma emphasizing the importance of precision in military operations to protect civilian lives. The Chief of Defence Staff also warned against engaging in any form of transactions with terrorists, as it undermines security efforts.
The military leadership, including the Chief of Army Staff and Borno State Governor, commended the troops for their dedication in combating insurgency and pledged continued support in the fight against terrorism. The efforts to secure the nation and ensure peace in the coming year were highlighted as a top priority.
