South Korea’s Jeonbuk appoints ex-Chelsea player Poyet manager

Gus Poyet, a former English Premier League player, is set to take on the role of manager at South Korea’s Jeonbuk, a twice Asian club champions as announced on Tuesday.

Poyet made history as the first Uruguayan manager in the English top flight when he managed Sunderland in 2013. He most recently led the Greece national team until March of this year.

At 57 years old, his main objective will be to revitalize Jeonbuk, a team that has clinched the South Korean title nine times but has faced challenges in recent years.

Jeonbuk narrowly avoided relegation from the K League top tier after finishing 10th out of 12 in the table and having to secure their position through a playoff earlier this month.

Poyet, known for his playing days at Chelsea and Tottenham, began his managerial career with Brighton in England’s third tier in 2009. He has also managed teams in Greece, Spain, China, Chile, and France.

Poyet’s former Chelsea teammate, Dan Petrescu, previously managed Jeonbuk but stepped down from the position in April of this year.
