South Korea’s opposition moves to impeach acting president

In a recent development, South Korea’s opposition has initiated an impeachment process against acting president Han Duck-soo. This move comes amidst heightened tensions over the appointment of judges to the Constitutional Court, which plays a crucial role in the impeachment proceedings against Han’s predecessor, President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The political turmoil in South Korea began when President Yoon declared martial law on December 3, leading to his suspension by parliament on December 14. To complete the impeachment process, a constitutional court ruling supporting parliament’s decision is required. However, the court currently lacks three judges, creating a deadlock in the process.

The opposition is advocating for Han to approve the nomination of three additional judges to fill the 9-member bench. Han’s reluctance to do so has led to calls for his impeachment by the opposition Democratic Party. The party has officially filed an impeachment motion against Han, emphasizing his failure to uphold the constitution by not appointing the necessary judges.

If the impeachment motion against Han is successful, it would be the first time in South Korea’s democratic history that an acting president has been impeached. In the event of Han’s impeachment, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok would assume the role of acting president.

The impeachment motion accuses Han of neglecting his duties as acting president, particularly in his refusal to appoint judges and endorse special probe bills related to President Yoon’s actions. The opposition views Han’s actions as a violation of his responsibilities to uphold the law and serve the public interest.

This political upheaval adds to the instability in South Korea’s vibrant political landscape. Additionally, President Yoon is facing serious criminal charges related to his martial law declaration, further complicating the situation. As the situation unfolds, South Korea braces for potential significant changes in its leadership and governance.
