The Speaker of the House of Representatives has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to clarify the recent dismissal of approximately 1,000 staff members and the subsequent payment of a N50 billion compensation package. This request was made during an investigative hearing conducted by the House’s Ad-hoc Committee in Abuja.
The Speaker emphasized the importance of understanding the reasoning behind the mass layoff, especially considering the current economic challenges. He stressed the need for transparency in the process to ensure the welfare and rights of the affected employees are safeguarded.
Additionally, the committee was tasked with examining how the N50 billion severance package was determined. The Speaker highlighted the significance of adhering to principles of due diligence, fairness, and due process in determining such a substantial compensation amount.
Transparency was underscored as a crucial element in maintaining public trust and upholding institutional integrity. While acknowledging the aim for a more efficient government, the Speaker emphasized the importance of balancing decisions with the well-being of employees and the stability of institutions.
He called on the Central Bank and other relevant government agencies to fully cooperate with the committee to facilitate the fulfillment of its responsibilities.
