Starlink becomes Kenya’s 7th largest ISP, eyes direct-to-mobile satellites

A recent report indicates that a satellite broadband provider, known for its rapid growth, has become Kenya’s seventh-largest internet service provider. In just six months, this provider has surpassed well-established local competitors, securing a notable share of the country’s internet market.

With a user base of over 19,000 customers, the satellite service has captured 1.1% of Kenya’s internet market, showcasing a significant shift in the competitive landscape. This growth highlights the increasing popularity of satellite services in regions where traditional networks face limitations.

While other satellite providers in Kenya combined serve a much smaller customer base, the rapid expansion of this particular provider has sparked regulatory concerns among local ISPs. To address these concerns, regulatory bodies are considering adjustments to licensing fees and levies that could impact the provider’s momentum.

Despite facing regulatory challenges, the satellite provider is making strategic moves to strengthen its presence in the market. By enhancing local infrastructure, introducing competitive pricing, and offering innovative solutions like direct satellite connections to mobile devices, the company aims to further solidify its position in the competitive landscape.

Although the provider currently holds a modest market share compared to industry leaders, its ambitious plans indicate a desire to expand and challenge the dominance of established players in Kenya’s internet market.
