Starlink launches in Botswana three months after securing licence

Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk, has launched in Botswana after securing an operating licence three months ago.

The hardware costs P4,820 ($363), shipping is P314 ($24), and the monthly subscription is P688 ($52).

Starlink’s entry into Botswana follows a year of engagement with the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA). Despite an initial rejection in February 2024, the licence was eventually granted in May 2024 after interventions from President Masisi.

Botswana’s internet service provider market is currently dominated by mobile network operators like BTC, Mascom, and Orange, as well as other broadband providers.

Botswana becomes the sixth country in southern Africa to have access to Starlink, joining Zambia, eSwatini, Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar.
