A former member of the House of Representatives in Benue State emphasized that state assemblies have the authority to summon governors to clarify state affairs. The ex-lawmaker expressed concerns about House members being denied entitlements while urging the House leadership to hold the governor accountable for these issues. He highlighted the constitutional power of the legislative arm to engage with the state Chief Executive on governance matters.
Recent reports indicated delays in payment of constituency allowances and the provision of official vehicles to Benue State House of Assembly members. The governor’s media adviser attributed the delays to the autonomy granted to the House following the 2024 budget passage. The Technical Adviser stated that negotiations were ongoing to address the challenges faced by the lawmakers.
The House Majority Leader confirmed the autonomy gained after the 2024 budget approval and assured that the 2025 budget would address outstanding issues. He mentioned that members had received varying amounts for constituency projects, with some yet to receive their entitled funds. Additionally, there were insufficient vehicles provided, leaving several members, including the Speaker, without official vehicles.
