A stone tablet inscribed with the 10 Commandments was sold at auction for $5 million by a prominent New York auction house. Despite doubts about its authenticity and missing one commandment, the bidding reached $4.2 million before closing at $5 million. The tablet, weighing 115 pounds and dating between 300 and 800 CE, was discovered in what is now Israel in 1913. It contains a Paleo-Hebrew script and was privately held until an archaeologist in Israel recognized its significance and acquired it. The tablet was later housed in a museum before being sold to a private collector. Although some scholars have scrutinized its origins, it has been studied and featured in scholarly publications. There are differing opinions among experts regarding its authenticity, with some raising concerns about its age and the lack of documentation.
