Any further disruptions to the academic calendar caused by university-based union strikes will worsen the crisis in the university system and should be avoided at all costs.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities recently issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government following decisions made during its National Executive Council meeting. ASUU’s leadership expressed disappointment in the government’s failure to address previous strike-related issues.
The union highlighted concerns such as the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, the need for increased funding, and the call for an emergency revitalization fund for public universities. ASUU also emphasized the importance of addressing outstanding allowances, salary payments, and other financial matters affecting its members.
ASUU’s grievances extend to issues like unauthorized recruitments, the excessive number of public universities, and violations of university regulations.
To resolve these issues, ASUU demanded autonomy for universities by removing them from certain government financial systems. Past strikes were triggered by the government’s failure to meet agreements, implement necessary reforms, and prioritize the welfare of university staff and students.
It is crucial for the government to allocate sufficient funds to address these issues and prioritize education over other expenses. Neglecting the education sector reflects poorly on the country’s leadership.
While alternative strategies beyond strikes have been suggested, the persistent lack of government responsiveness has garnered widespread sympathy for ASUU’s cause. The government must fulfill its commitments, improve educational standards, and invest in the tertiary education sector.
Nigerian universities face challenges due to underfunding and inadequate resources, leading to disruptions in academic activities and a decline in standards. ASUU’s demands include a review of university proliferation and adequate funding to support lecturers and educational institutions.
The government should collaborate with the union to implement solutions and secure necessary funding for the revitalization of the education sector, prioritizing education as it does with security funding.
