The Academic Staff Union of Universities has raised concerns over the alleged victimization of its members in public universities nationwide. The union is urging the government to honor all agreements made with them to support the functioning of public universities.
At a press briefing in Sokoto, the zonal chairman of the union highlighted the need for the government to address issues such as salary payments, release of withheld salaries, and funding for university revitalization as agreed upon in the memorandum of action signed between ASUU and the Federal Government.
ASUU expressed disappointment at the government’s failure to fulfill these agreements, leading to victimization and mistreatment of its members by some university administrators. The union emphasized the importance of academic freedom and urged university authorities to uphold civility and respect for educators.
In conclusion, ASUU called on the government to abandon its anti-intellectual stance and uphold the dignity of public universities by honoring their commitments. The union emphasized the vital role of public universities in the nation’s development and urged the government to support their growth and sustainability.
