A tragic incident occurred at Swali Ultra Modern Market, Yenagoa where a woman known as Onorakpoma lost her life due to a stray bullet during a clash between two cult groups, the Bobous and Greenlanders.
Originally from Emede community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, Onorakpoma was a trader at the market before the unfortunate incident.
Efforts were made to save her life as she was being transported to Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to remove the bullet, but she passed away on Monday.
The necessity for enhanced security measures around the market’s slaughter area was emphasized to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Following the incident, some security officials reportedly ordered the closure of shops in the Slaughter Road section of the market, but gradually, traders resumed their activities throughout the day.
There were concerns raised by the Isoko community in Bayelsa State as the police allegedly prevented the deceased’s family from claiming the body for burial.
A source revealed that Onorakpoma had requested not to be taken to a morgue if she didn’t survive, but to be buried immediately, further detailing the events that led to her tragic death.
The situation escalated as the police guarded the corpse at her residence, leading to questions from community leaders about the handling of the case.
In response to the incident, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the clash, emphasizing the ongoing investigation before the body could be released for burial.
