The Nigeria Labour Congress, opposition parties, and economists are questioning the handling of federal allocations by state governments. There are concerns about the justification of the funds allocated to the 36 state governments in 2024, which totaled N5.22tn. President Bola Tinubu highlighted the importance of state governors in driving Nigeria’s development, with 65% of federation accounts going to states.
Despite an increase in allocation, the NLC expressed disappointment at the neglect of the masses by state governors. Concerns were raised about the lack of impact on the people despite increased revenue. Opposition parties in various states criticized governors for failing to deliver meaningful development despite receiving substantial allocations.
Economists and experts emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and tangible outcomes from the allocated funds. There are calls for improved governance, fiscal responsibility, and public vigilance to ensure that state revenues translate into visible benefits for citizens. The overall consensus is the necessity for better management of state revenues to drive sustainable development.
