‘Substandard petrol’: Nigerians demand probe as retailers back NNPCL

Nigerians have raised concerns about the quality of petrol being sold in filling stations nationwide and are urging the Federal Government to conduct fresh tests for verification. This follows a viral video alleging that petrol from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has a short lifespan in fuel tanks, despite assurances from the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria that the fuel meets quality standards.

In response to the allegations, the NNPC has refuted claims of selling substandard petrol with a high burn rate, stating that a significant amount of Premium Motor Spirit sold at its stations in Lagos is sourced from the Dangote Refinery. The NNPC emphasized that the fuel quality is guaranteed by adhering to strict industry standards.

Amidst social media reactions calling for investigations and experiments to verify the burn rate of NNPC petrol, various users shared differing opinions on the accuracy of the initial experiment conducted with two generators. While some doubted the conditions were identical for a fair comparison, others insisted on the need for objective assessments.

Additionally, PETROAN has defended the NNPC, stating that rigorous testing has been conducted on NNPC petroleum products, confirming their adherence to industry standards. The association highlighted various tests performed to ensure the quality of the products meets regulatory limits and promotes healthy competition within the industry.

PETROAN’s National President advised caution and responsibility when sharing information on sensitive matters, stressing the importance of accurate and verified data in public discourse.
