Taraba varsity ASUU suspends strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Taraba State University has announced the suspension of its strike that commenced on December 5, 2024. The union leader cited the partial implementation of agreements by the Taraba State Government as the reason for ending the strike. These agreements include funding for the university, payment of Earned Academic Allowances, staff pension and gratuity, backlog of salaries, constitution of a governing council, and adjustments to the minimum wage.

The union leader expressed gratitude to the state governor for intervening and resolving the issues that led to the strike. Additionally, he appreciated the Ministry of Tertiary Education, university management, and the public for their support during the strike.

During negotiations, the government committed to addressing various issues, such as enhancing university funding, disbursement of Earned Academic Allowance arrears, and implementing a state-defined pension scheme. The government also pledged to finalize a plan for clearing salary arrears and ensure compliance with statutory requirements for the constitution of the governing council.

Following approval from ASUU National, the Taraba State University chapter decided to suspend the strike immediately. The union emphasized its dedication to creating a conducive academic environment for students, staff, and the university community.

With the strike lifted, the second-semester examinations, which were disrupted, are set to resume soon.
