Tax bills: PDP, others back Mohammed as Presidency knocks gov

The stance of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on the Tax Reform Bills, which he criticized as anti-people, has garnered support from the Peoples Democratic Party and various stakeholders. However, the Presidency has urged the governor to retract what it termed as his “inflammatory” statement regarding the bills.

The governor expressed opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform policies, labeling them as “anti-northern” and favoring only a specific section of the country. He emphasized the potential economic setbacks and threats to national unity that could arise from such reforms, urging the federal government to reconsider and adopt more inclusive policies.

In response to Mohammed’s remarks, calls were made for productive dialogue with the Federal Government rather than issuing threats. The PDP stood in solidarity with the governor’s views, denouncing the tax reforms as anti-people and emphasizing the importance of tangible results from government borrowing.

The APC urged for dialogue over the controversial tax reform bills, emphasizing the need for public consultation and input before the bills are passed. Various groups and individuals expressed differing opinions on the matter, with some supporting the bills while others raised concerns about their potential impacts.

Efforts to ascertain the PDP’s official position on the bills revealed internal divisions within the party. Despite differing views, the need for constructive engagement and prioritizing Nigeria’s progress over regional interests was highlighted by various stakeholders.

In conclusion, while the Tax Reform Bills continue to spark controversy and differing opinions, the importance of consultation, dialogue, and prioritizing national interests in decision-making processes has been emphasized.
