TCN begins community engagement to protect power infrastructure

To address the increasing issue of vandalism of power infrastructure, the Transmission Company of Nigeria recently initiated a public awareness campaign in various communities within the Federal Capital Territory. One such community visited was Leleyi Gbari in the Kwali Area Council. The purpose of the campaign was to educate residents on the importance of safeguarding the country’s power infrastructure.

This initiative forms part of TCN’s strategy to combat the ongoing vandalism that has resulted in significant damage to electricity facilities. The Ministry of Power has proposed an N8bn budget to the National Assembly for advocacy, education, enlightenment, and the deployment of technology to protect power infrastructure.

During the sensitization program in Leleyi Gbari, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stressed the significance of community involvement in protecting national assets. Mbah highlighted the severe consequences of power infrastructure vandalism on both local communities and the nation as a whole. She emphasized that ensuring the security of power infrastructure is a collective responsibility that citizens must uphold.

Mbah encouraged Nigerians to take ownership of power installations and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to mitigate vandalism and related crimes. TCN’s Assistant General Manager of Gwagwalada Transmission Station, Mr. Ismalia Doguwa, echoed the importance of educating communities on safeguarding power infrastructure and called for enhanced efforts to protect these installations.

Yusuf Sarki, the Head of Leleyi Gbari Community, expressed appreciation to TCN for conducting the sensitization campaign in their area. Sarki pledged the community’s cooperation with security agencies and vigilante groups to secure power installations. He also appealed to the Federal Government to connect Leleyi Gbari to the national grid.
