Telcos condemn hike in Starlink’s internet subscription

The recent price increase by Starlink without prior approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission has drawn criticism from the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria. The move to raise internet subscription fees by 97% and hardware kit prices by 34% was deemed a violation of regulatory authority.

With nearly 24,000 subscribers, Starlink cited “excessive inflation” as the reason for the price adjustments. However, ALTON Chairman emphasized the importance of telecom operators complying with regulatory guidelines, especially obtaining approval from the NCC before implementing tariff changes.

The NCC, responsible for regulating Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, expressed dissatisfaction with Starlink’s price hike, stating it infringed upon the Nigerian Communications Act and license conditions. Despite a request for a price adjustment pending approval, Starlink proceeded with the increase, prompting the NCC to consider enforcement measures for regulatory stability.

As concerns over affordability and internet access arise due to the significant price hike, the NCC is under pressure to take action against Starlink to ensure compliance and protect consumers. Meanwhile, other mobile operators are seeking approval for tariff adjustments after an 11-year hiatus, with ongoing discussions on the industry’s sustainability and pricing strategies.
