Tinubu hails Fayemi’s contributions to democracy on 60th birthday

President Bola Tinubu recently celebrated the 60th birthday of former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, praising his unwavering commitment to democracy, governance, and national progress. Tinubu reminisced about their enduring friendship since their involvement in the pro-democracy movement of the 1990s, where they stood against military rule.

During the oppressive regime of General Sani Abacha, Fayemi’s intelligence, dedication, and strategic acumen were crucial to the pro-democracy cause, particularly in advocating for the release of Chief MKO Abiola and the recognition of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Tinubu highlighted Fayemi’s instrumental role in establishing Radio Kudirat to amplify the pro-democracy movement’s activities.

Following Nigeria’s transition to democracy in 1999, Fayemi established the Centre for Democracy and Development, emphasizing peace and security in Africa. His foray into politics saw him contest and eventually win the Ekiti governorship in 2010 after a legal battle. Fayemi played a significant part in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013 and was pivotal in the party’s success in the 2015 elections.

After serving as Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Fayemi returned as Ekiti State governor in 2018, where he made notable strides despite economic challenges. Tinubu applauded Fayemi’s dedication to the APC, citing his selfless act of stepping down during the 2023 presidential primaries.

Acknowledging Fayemi’s multifaceted accomplishments as an academic, author, and development expert, Tinubu extended warm wishes for continued health and success in his future endeavors as he marked his 60th birthday.
