During the 2023 general elections, a prominent figure from the Labour Party criticized the foreign trips undertaken by the President and Vice President of the country, expressing concern over their absence amidst domestic challenges. The President traveled to the UK and France, while the Vice President visited Sweden for bilateral talks.
In response to justifications by the Presidency that the absence of both leaders does not create a leadership vacuum, the critic remarked that such extended absences are troubling given the pressing issues in the nation. Emphasizing the need for their presence to address the country’s problems, the critic questioned the decision to delegate international engagements, suggesting that more efficient use of time and resources was necessary.
The critic highlighted the significant distances traveled by the leaders for these trips, contrasting it with the urgent needs of the citizens facing hardships. The lack of fiscal responsibility and the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the people and managing national resources efficiently were underscored as crucial aspects of leadership during challenging times.
Notably, these recent trips mark the second instance of both leaders being absent simultaneously since taking office. The President’s previous travels to various countries for summits and conferences, along with the Vice President’s engagements in international events, have raised concerns about their extended periods away from the country.
