The All Progressives Congress (APC) responded to criticisms from opposition figures regarding the reforms and policies of the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu. One of the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidates in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, expressed concerns about the impact of the reforms on Nigerians, alleging that they have led to increased hardship. Rhodes-Vivour criticized the government for what he perceived as favoring the President’s associates, bankers, and officials, while ordinary citizens have not seen positive outcomes.
On the contrary, some APC leaders defended the reforms, emphasizing that they have curbed corruption within the government. Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), highlighted how the removal of subsidies has reduced opportunities for corruption that were prevalent in previous administrations. He explained that certain practices, like exploiting exchange rates for personal gain, were prevalent in the past but have been addressed by the current administration.
Similarly, Dr. Dennis Otiotio, the APC chairman in Bayelsa State, acknowledged that although the reforms may be challenging, they are essential for building a better future for Nigeria. He specifically mentioned the removal of fuel subsidies as a step towards financial accountability and improved governance, despite the short-term difficulties it may pose.
Overall, the APC leaders defended the reforms initiated by President Tinubu, portraying them as necessary steps towards progress and transparency in Nigeria’s governance.
