Traffic offenders to do community service in Edo

The Edo State Public Response Safety Team’s coordinator, Kelly Okungbowa, announced plans to establish a mobile court to address traffic violations in the state. Offenders will initially face community service as Governor Monday Okpehbolo emphasized avoiding imprisonment at the moment.

Following the team’s formation to tackle traffic congestion, particularly around King’s Square in Benin City and other busy areas, Okungbowa highlighted issues such as illegal parking, passenger drop-offs by commercial drivers, and street vending as major causes of traffic jams.

During a public awareness campaign in the city center, Okungbowa stressed the team’s role in restoring law and order. The team aims to eradicate illegal street trading and improper parking to improve traffic flow, with a focus on educating the public about the government’s stance on these issues.

Bus and taxi drivers, street vendors, and market traders are urged to comply with regulations to prevent traffic disruptions. The team’s primary goal is to ensure smooth traffic flow in Benin City and throughout the state through awareness and enforcement measures. Arrests for violations have not begun, with the emphasis currently on educating the public about the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities that hinder traffic flow.
