Tribunal reserves judgment in Edo governorship election

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has concluded hearings and reserved judgment on a petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate regarding the 2024 governorship election in the state. The petition challenges the victory of the All Progressives Congress candidate as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Various witnesses were presented during the hearing, including a Senior Technical Officer from INEC’s ICT Department who provided evidence related to alleged over-voting. The petitioners are seeking nullification of the election based on several grounds such as non-serialization of ballots, incorrect collation of figures, and erroneous computation of scores.

The tribunal heard arguments from both the petitioners and the respondents, with each presenting their final written addresses. The respondents’ legal teams argued that the election was conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act and that the petition lacked substantial evidence to support its claims.

After considering all arguments, the tribunal reserved judgment for a later date, which will be communicated to the parties involved. The lead counsels for both sides presented their cases before the tribunal, emphasizing the lack of evidence and merit in the petitioners’ claims. The tribunal will announce its decision after reviewing all submissions.
