Uber, Bolt unveil women-only service in Paris

Two competing ride-hailing platforms in Paris have recently introduced options for women to request a female driver for added safety. The “Uber by Women” feature, launched without extra charges, may result in longer wait times due to its popularity. This initiative follows similar implementations by Uber in various European countries as a response to safety concerns regarding drivers.

Uber aims to enhance the safety of its female customers by offering this service, which currently has around 1,500 female drivers available in Paris. The app explicitly states that the option is exclusively for women, and drivers have the right to decline requests from men. Despite potential delays, Uber hopes to incentivize more women to join as drivers by reducing the associated fees.

Laureline Serieys, Uber’s French head, believes that the “Uber by Women” initiative will make the ride-hailing profession more appealing to women who may not have considered it before. Additionally, Bolt, a European competitor, plans to introduce a similar option called “Women by Women” in France by the end of 2024 to prioritize the safety of female passengers and drivers alike.

Ensuring the safety and comfort of women using ride-hailing services is a top priority for both companies, reflecting a commitment to meeting the specific safety needs of female users while supporting women in the industry.
