UNICEF tasks media practitioners on reporting child rights

The representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Nigeria emphasized the importance of media professionals reporting on children’s issues accurately. The call was made during a symposium organized by UNICEF and the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Lagos to mark World Children’s Day 2024. The event saw stakeholders from various sectors discussing the role of the media in advocating for child rights.

During the symposium, it was highlighted that journalists should prioritize stories related to children by providing in-depth investigative reports. The media was urged to go beyond individual stories and follow up on issues affecting children. This, it was emphasized, could help in raising awareness and promoting accountability in society.

The UNICEF representative stressed the power of communication in driving behavioral change and impacting society. She cited concerning statistics about the state of children in Nigeria, including high rates of poverty, infant mortality, malnutrition, and lack of vaccination.

The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors called for a collective commitment from media practitioners, policymakers, and health professionals to prioritize child rights. He emphasized the importance of storytelling in highlighting the challenges faced by children and advocating for solutions.

Additionally, a speaker at the event expressed concerns about the future of Nigerian children, highlighting the risks they face without access to education and skills. Another speaker emphasized the importance of polio vaccination, urging caregivers to ensure their children receive the necessary doses for immunity.

The symposium aimed to underscore the critical role of the media in promoting child rights and driving positive change for children in Nigeria.
