UNILAG in darkness as Eko DisCo disconnects power over N300m debt

The power supply to the University of Lagos, Akoka, has been disconnected by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company due to unpaid electricity bills. The university management disclosed this information on Wednesday. The institution has been struggling with increasing electricity costs, exacerbated by EKEDC upgrading the university’s tariff category from “Band B” to “Band A,” leading to a significant rise in monthly electricity bills. Prior to the upgrade, the university paid between N150 million and N180 million monthly. However, under the new “Band A” tariff, the June bill nearly doubled, reaching almost N300 million, posing a challenge for the university to manage. The campus has been experiencing a blackout since Tuesday, and despite negotiations with EKEDC and a recent payment of N180 million on August 20, the university was disconnected from the power supply on August 27 without prior notice. The management expressed disappointment over this situation and mentioned a sudden bill increase in July to nearly half a billion naira (N472 million). Despite the payment made on August 20, the university remains disconnected, with ongoing efforts to resolve the issue with EKEDC. Power supply across the campus will be rationed until further notice.
