The altercation began when the lecturer interrupted the student’s recording of a dance video on campus. Witnesses reported that the lecturer tapped the student on the shoulder, leading to the student reacting negatively. The situation escalated, with the student grabbing the lecturer’s clothes before being stopped by bystanders.
A video of the altercation circulated on social media, showing the student confronting the lecturer. The lecturer later shared his version of events, explaining that he approached the student to request the deletion of the video. When the student refused, he attempted to confiscate the phone, resulting in the altercation. The lecturer stated that he would leave further actions to the university’s committee.
The university responded by launching a comprehensive investigation into the incident, as directed by the Vice-Chancellor. They emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and decorum on campus and assured the public of appropriate measures following the investigation.
The National Association of Nigerian Students also denounced the assault and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
